Rebecca and I love road trips. This Friday we’ll be driving 16 hours to upstate Michigan. That’s a lot of car time (aka lots of This American Life to catch up on). But what to eat and drink in the car for all that time? Do you snack your way through the day, or eat meals? Stay awake with a few Cokes/Red Bulls in the cooler or make your own iced coffee?
When we travel by car for long periods of time, we try to eat healthy meals and snacks, albeit with the occasional junky road-trip favorite. Believe me, I have my fair share of gas station food indulgences: Combos, Snyder’s Onion and Honey Mustard Pretzel Pieces, Corn Nuts, Cream Soda…
If you have to eat fast food on a road trip, try to avoid burger places and fried chicken places. Find a Subway or Quiznos or comparable sandwich shop. It is much easier to select healthy options from a Subway than a McDonald’s. Gas stations usually carry healthier options like granola bars, nuts, and fruit for a snack while fueling up the car.
This time, we’re planning to bring the following in a cooler:
- Sandwiches: Turkey, Cheese, Lettuce, Arugula, Mayonaise, Fruit Preserves
- Celery and Peanut Butter
- Baked Sweet Potato Chips
- Something salty and delicious, like Snyder’s Pieces
- Iced Coffee
Off we go!
