Meal Plan: February 1 – February 8, 2015

Happy February!

It’s hard to believe that it is already one month into 2015, but here we are. It’s Superbowl Sunday, so we’ll be bringing loaded nachos to a party with friends. Nothing like a dinner consisting of chips, dip, cheese, pizza, and beer. I guess there will be tomatoes, onions, and peppers on the nachos.

We’re still trying to take it easy on the grocery budget. This month Rebecca has an extra-large tuition payment (like… in the thousands), so making sensible choices at the supermarket is going to be pretty important. I’m hoping to spend between $40 and $50 a week on groceries. People’s eyes sometime bug out when we throw around those numbers, but I’m not counting non-food purchases at the grocery store. Trash bags, cat food, dish soap, shampoo… these things live on a separate line of our budget.

Also, my garden seeds arrived! I ordered from Sow True Seed this year, after a lot of hemming and hawing. I looked at catalogs from Park Seed, Gurney’s, Sow True Seed and Seeds of Change this year and even went so far as to fill up a shopping cart at each website. The difference? Park Seed, Seeds of Change and Gurney’s wanted to charge me between $6 and $12 for shipping (of around 10 seed packets!). Sow True Seed’s charge: less than $2. They are located in Asheville, NC and specialize in open-pollinated, organic, and heirloom seeds. This was a no-brainer.

What I’ll be looking forward to in the garden, once planting season begins:

  • Tomatoes: Cherokee Purple, Chocolate Cherry, Brandywine Yellow, Blush Plum.
  • Beets: Golden Detroit.
  • Eggplant: Black Beauty.
  • Greens: Freckles and Green Oakleaf Lettuce, Red-Streaked Mizuna, Toscana Kale, “One Kilo” Napa Cabbage.
  • Peppers: Kaala Red Bell, Corno di Torro Rosso, Poblano.
  • Beans: Maxibel Bush Bean.
  • Broccoli: Green Sprouting Calabrese.
